On the bright side, the construction is under way! We are working on building a new apartment (likely for live in workers), soccer field (as opposed to the three level courtyard we have now) and painting some areas.
Thank you for your interest in Casa Hogar (Acapulco Children’s Home) and allowing us to share with you a little bit of the children’s home history and needs. We hope you will read this information with an open heart and that it is helpful to you in learning who we are, who we serve and why we serve.
History:
The Acapulco Children’s Home was started around 40 years ago to minister to the needs of disadvantaged children. Bill and Vivian Mead of Dallas Texas donated the property, a former hotel located in the older part of town. Bill was at the time vice-president of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, and Dr. Graham visited and provided encouragement in the early years. Several years ago the home came under the oversight of the Jesus of Nazareth Church, one of six Presbyterian Churchs started in Acapulco by PCA missionaries. The elders of the church, together with the staff, are responsible for the function of the home and well being of each child there.
Description:
At the present time, there are around 60 children of all ages living in the home. Their reasons for being there vary, but a common factor is that they are unwanted or unloved. Some children were brought to the home by relatives who could no longer care for them. Others were approached on the street by our staff members and, with the testimony of recent recruits, encouraged to see what the home was all about. The children are not legally required to remain at the home; they may leave at any time. Some refuse to follow the home rules or choose not to give up their former way of life and end up leaving. Others, however, remain because they find love and security. For them, it may be the only safe and caring environment they have ever known. They find a chance to rebuild Their lives, develop character and self-esteem, and come to know a loving God.
Each child has designated chores and responsibilities and they all have the opportunity to attend various schools, based on their abilities.
They attend church every Sunday and receive a Christian education throughout the week. It is touching to see how they have learned to help and care for each other and how love and hope have transformed their lives. With the help of Christian staff members, the children have been able to identify how they have grown, both physically and spiritually. |
